Parent and Kid Reviews on. Is this book dark? Is it a bit scary? Is it for everyone? However, no book is for everyone, and some reviewers on here are making it sound as if this book is a manifesto for children to be horrid and immoral. It is NOT. Matilda is a little girl who is a genius and has an evil headmistress and horrid parents who if real would be abusive they leave her alone at home, call her names, set a bad example, etc. However, Matilda does not let this stop her. A lot of people are saying Matilda only is saved by her powers. In the end, she overcomes a final obstacle by her powers. But, she uses her own cleverness and strength to overcome obstacles before then. She glues her fathers hat to his hair, scares her parents into thinking a talking parrot is a ghost, encourages and supports a classmate who is being bullied by their headmistress, and helps her teacher find strength. Matilda is not a cheery, happy Disney strong, but it is so much better because it helps children learn that, even though the world can be very dark and scary, there can be light by looking to strength inside. Children know magic is not real.

Parents need to know that Matilda is a surreal family movie based on the book by Roald Dahl. It includes a lot of cartoonish violence, nearly all of it perpetrated by a bullying school principal. Children who displease the evil principal are put in "the chokey," a dark closet lined with nails and broken…. Though Matilda's decision to stand up for those who can't or won't stand up for themselves is admirable as is her positive attitude , there's plenty of iffy stuff here.
People often talk about the darkness in Roald Dahl's children's books — and it's true, he doesn't hold back on references to bullying, poverty, death, and the dangers of being addicted to chewing gum. What's talked about less often, though, is how much the darkness is balanced by Dahl's jovial, conversational tone, Quentin Blake's cheery, scribbly drawings, and the warm, loving parental figures that their young characters invariably meet. These vital ingredients ensure that however scary Dahl's stories can get, no one is going to be traumatised by them. The same can't be said of the latest adaptation of his work, Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical, which premiered at the London Film Festival on Wednesday. As close to Stephen King as it is to Dahl, it's only a couple of tweaks away from being the year's most disturbing gothic horror movie.
