CMON has made a name for itself in the past few years for Kickstarting tabletop games that contain gobs of gorgeously-sculpted minis. Massive Darkness is no exception. Massive Darkness is a cooperative dungeon crawler for players based on the Zombicide system. Your band of adventurers will fight goblins, massive darkness review, orcs, hellhounds, demons, and more as they work through a series of ever-more-difficult campaign adventures.

So some years back I was looking for a HeroQuest style game to try out with the kids. Something that would sit on the line between dungeon crawl and board game. So I backed the game thinking that it might provide…. The components are good. The tiles are nice and thick, the cards are well illustrated, the minis are great. One complaint that came in as the kickstarter landed was that some of the minis had been presented as looking larger than they were. The book comes with cardboard counters for things like treasure chests and health markers.

Darkness returns 10 years after the events of Massive Darkness. Take the fight to Hell itself. Massive Darkness 2 add light and dark tiles to the game, which can grant players specific bonuses,. There are not many spiritual themes to speak of beyond stereotypical use of demons. Massive Darkness 2: Hellscape is a dungeon-crawler through-and-through. There are tons of dice, tons of loot, and tons of baddies. The core game includes a tutorial and 10 scenarios for players to enjoy, 6 heroes, 62 bad guy miniatures, and a host of tokens and cards. To play, players choose a scenario, set up the game board, and pick characters. There are 4 phases of each round: hero phase, enemy phase, darkness phase, and level up phase. During the hero phase, players take 3 actions, usually moving, attacking, and interacting with an objective resting is for the weak. Loot abounds in Massive Darkness 2 , which is a good thing because as the scenario progresses, the bad guys get tougher, so players had better get tougher too! Massive Darkness 2 also does a great job of offering progressively better loot as the scenario goes on. All heroes benefit from the very powerful shadow dice if they attack from dark spaces. Each hero feels totally different from the other 5, and that alone adds to the replay value of the game because you can explore vastly different character combinations. Moreover, all heroes come with a skills deck that significantly buffs an aspect of the hero.

Not so tough that it feels impossible, and not so easy that players never lose, although there were a few scenarios that felt particularly easy with the set massive darkness review heroes we played with.

Unfortunately, not all of us are well equipped for questing I don't think this battle is going as planned This might sound like it would involve flashlights, torches, and candles lighting up rooms and fending off the literal dark note to game designers: that's an unexplored theme for a game if I've ever heard one , the actual nitty gritty of it is notably more run of the mill.

Massive Darkness is one of the shining examples of the symbiosis of modern-day board games and Kickstarter. Dungeons are rife with both treasures and terrors — you never know what will be lurking around the next turn. Massive Darkness fills that niche nicely. Massive Darkness is a dungeon-crawl , cooperative board game with no game master. Explore the darkness for loot and experience, facing hordes of awesome miniatures. The components are extremely high-quality, the rules are straightforward, and the mechanics allow for variable player combinations and experience. So grab some friends, grab a table, and get ready for some good old sneaking and slashing.
