Mario has always been a lovable, carefree character who never holds a grudge against even his greatest adversaries. The Mario Party series is what kicked off this trend of the cast of Mario getting together to compete in a board game-style competition. While it seemed like a strange departure when the first game came out for a series so focused on running and jumping to spin off into a turn-based game with dice rolling, it turned out to be one of the most successful diversions the Italian plumber ever made. Dating back to the debut on the N64, Mario Party games have appeared on just about every Nintendo console released since. Some sequels are more similar to the original formula of traversing a map via dice rolls, collecting coins and items, playing minigames, and purchasing stars to determine the winner, while others only vaguely resemble that well-loved structure. In the over two decades since we were first invited to this crazy party with Mario and friends, there have been nearly 20 different Mario Party games released. While some are held in extremely high regard, there are more than a few that are seen as downright atrocious.

Good grief. Is there going to be any reason to buy this game over the seven other Mario Party titles available on the Wii, or Wii Party , or any of the other mini-game collections that have flooded the Wii market since day one? Those are the questions that filled my head as I limply held the box for Mario Party 9 in my hand for the first time. After playing the game for about two hours, I had some answers. Then I played the game for 20 more hours, and I had some fun.

I can't stand the car at all. Mario Party 8 or 9? So what 9 has over 8 is better minigames and graphics I prefer 8's soundtrack. But 8 actually has a pretty robust board gameplay with items that feel like they harken back to the item systems before the capsules that made up the items in Mario Parties 5, 6, and 7. The hidden boards on the other hand can be unlocked in multiplayer as well. I've watched video reviews for both games and I can't decide. Mario Party 8 is a noteworthy arrival on Wii because it marks the first Nintendo-published project that does not run in widescreen mode. To our knowledge, this hasn't happened since the days of GameCube and quite possibly with the previous Mario Party outing. To its credit though, the game's title screen and main menu both run in full widescreen, but as soon as any sort of gameplay begins, everything transpires in with superimposed bars.
