By brandenjg January 2, in Technical Questions and Answers. Hi everyone, I've just got myself a little mariner outboard and i was wondering what oil mix it needs. Ive been told that the factory recommended is but after doing a search on google, alot of people are saying I was hoping someone on here could tell me the right mix. I'm also looking for some sort of manual for the outboard for reference if i need to do any repairs or maintenance. Im going to be taking it and the boat down to wells wednesday to test it out Mainly because i see no reason to buy the toll for the broads till i'll actually be using it after april. I now have a 3. I should think this would suit your engine too. With regard a manual, I don't know if sending a PM on this link would be of any use to you? Thing is, dependant on age, it could be either, but running it on will do no harm especially if you are running it at high revs. As for the manual, as these little ones are all basically Tohatsu rebadged here is a PDF of the Tohatsu manual which should help. Forgot the link, sorry! I've had the Yamaha 2B version another clone of the same engine for nearly 20 years, and have always run it on , instead of the specified Small two stroke outboards were often marketed as " ", to keep up the competition between manufacturers boasts, similar to car oil change limits going up, sounds good, but not as good for the engine's long term life. My Yamaha 2 and my Evinrude 4hp twin run very sweetly and cleanly on , and quite a bit cooler than when I tried them at

Ben Meakins revives a seized outboard engine — a trusty 2hp Mariner motor that can benefit from spare parts badged as a Yamaha 2hp. The trouble began when I bought a rowing dinghy to use as a tender instead of a borrowed sailing club dinghy. First step was to remove the cowling and faceplate. This exposed the powerhead of the engine. The cylinder and piston was the most likely cause of seizure, so it was time to look here. I removed the recoil starter and the fuel tank and set it aside, to gain access to the cylinder head. Four bolts later one sheared off, but the stud later came out with the help of a large pair of mole grips and the head came off, showing the piston, stuck fast at the top of its travel, with rusty, oily liquid as the red-handed culprit. I sprayed in some penetrating oil and left it to do its job, returning every evening for a week to add more. A sharp tap with a softwood punch and a hammer moved the piston a few millimetres.

Yamaha and Mariner 2hp engines have a unique way of accessing the water pump impeller, the water pump sits above the the gearbox but impeller removal requires getting inside the gearbox. Heat the split line with a heat gun Not direct flame , I use a Black and Decker w heat gun. With the lower unit horizontal, take a hold of the driveshaft above the water pump housing, look into the gearbox where you removed the clip. Pull the driveshaft away from the gearbox gently and you will see it starts to come out of the gear. However you want to do it, photo, Sharpie etc, make a note of the direction of rotation that the impeller is fitted. Remove the Impeller with long nosed pliers. Gently warm the casing with a heat gun and remove the impeller metal cup and the plastic housing cup. When you are fitting the plastic cup and impeller metal cup into the gearbox casing you need to align first of all the tang on the underside of the impeller metal cup with the slot in the plastic cup and then the plastic cup needs to align with the recess in the casing which receives the impeller tang, this will ensure that the holes which allow the water flow in the plastic and metal cups align with the holes in the gearbox casting which let the water flow in.

A few more days in this vein and, eventually, with the encouragement of a large screwdriver used as a lever on the flywheel, the piston moved its full travel from top to bottom and back again.
