Of course, there are times where being resourceful isn't enough to survive, but her shortcomings can be nullified by the talents of Reg and Nanachi, just like how her own skills patch up their weaknesses.

Made in abyss characters

At first glance, Made in Abyss comes off as any kid-friendly anime series would. It's art and backdrops are aesthetically pleasing, with cutesy, chibi-style characters and a musical score that instills a sense of wonder and adventure. Just like the Abyss that Reg and Riko descend into: the deeper one goes, the more terrifying the truth reveals itself to be. Made in Abyss may look innocent and childish on its surface, but below that surface is a gruesomeness that would give any kid nightmares. It's beautiful, aesthetically pleasing art would undoubtedly be appealing to any anime fan, but that beauty has an ugly underbelly which doesn't fully rear its head until viewers least expect it. Made in Abyss isn't kid friendly, but every adult should see at least once. There are many aspects of Made in Abyss that make it appear like a series for children, but when looked at more closely that clearly is not the case. The deeper viewers get into the series, the darker it gets, pulling audiences into the abyss gradually along with Reg and Riko. The Made in Abyss anime is adapted from an online-only manga published in Web Comic Gamma Plus, a publication that mainly consists of seinen manga series made for adults. That characterization is not unwarranted, as Made in Abyss contains some of the darkest and most heart-wrenching scenes in anime.

The Smart Guy : She has a near encyclopedic knowledge of the flora and fauna in the Abyss, and is knowledgeable in some of its the more obscure bits of lore. That said, it's implied whatever's left of her mind in this state is at least accepting of this situation if it means helping Riko. But food does not replenish his Incinerator charges. You either succeed and live through the day survival training using everything you've learned and just the tools on your person, or you die and fail to prove you can manage against the harsh environment. Her mother chose to continue pursuing the Abyss' greatest enigmas, and is as good as dead to the surface world. Sink or Swim Mentor : Ozen isn't one to intentionally kill her pupils, as she says to Reg after waking him up, but she's perfectly willing to let people get in over their heads as a way of gaining a realistic understanding of their own capabilities and what they're up against.

Seems like a happy story, right? So despite the cutesy looks of the main characters, don't be fooled for even a second. The story follows Riko, an orphan who dreams of becoming a great cave raider, much like her mother, and solving the mystery of the Abyss.
