Macizo de la Maladeta is the highest mountain range and the first glacial massif in the Pyrenees.

Its highest point is Pena Trevinca at 2, metres 6, ft. Another important peak is Cabeza de Manzaneda 1, m. Its eastern end merges with the Cantabrian Mountains. The relief of the system, with an average height of metres 1, ft , is relatively smooth compared with other Iberian ranges. It is however very complex, having no defined structural alignment owing to the heavy fluvial erosion that has fragmented the terrain. Generally the system includes mountains that are rounded in shape, often topped by small rocky outcrops, as well as horsts , basins and faults , roughly aligned in a N-S direction. Since rain is abundant in Galicia, the undisturbed areas of the massif have a soft soil texture and are covered in dense vegetation of temperate deciduous forest where Quercus petraea and Quercus robur oaks predominate.

It is a dome-shaped region approximately 10 miles 16 km across and rising about 14, feet 4, m from the sea floor. The highest point of the massif is around metres 2, ft beneath the surface. It is believed that the massif was formed underneath the nearby Mid-Atlantic Ridge but was pulled from under the ridge during the movement of the plates , about 1. Geologic studies of the massif have indicated that it is not composed of the black basalt typical of the ocean floor but rather of dense green peridotite , which is usually found in the mantle. The central dome is corrugated and striated in a way that is representative of an exposed ultramafic oceanic core complex. An expedition to the area in made an important advance in the study of the ocean floor. It found that a steeply sloping detachment fault is associated with the oceanic core complex structure.
