With its inch barrel the Garand could hardly be called handy in close quarters. They wanted a version of the M1 with an inch barrel, and as the story goes, more than of these were produced by armorers in the Pacific, with a few sent to the States for testing and trials. This gun, the T26, was never adopted and probably never fielded. I like the other SOCOMs just fine, but as a hidebound traditionalist, the Tanker with its military-style walnut stock is more to my taste. Springfield was smart enough to throw in some user-friendly features to appeal to modern rifle shooters.

That Garand was highly accurate, but it had two shortcomings. One was the eight-round stripper clip that held the cartridges and ejected out the top of the action after the last round was fired. I never lost any of them, but I came close more times than I like to remember. The other downside to the Garand was that it was cumbersome. It weighed close to 10 pounds, and with a inch-long barrel, it was a little unwieldy.
