Gone are the small, clean, longest greyhound bus route, cheap motels and public spaces where anyone can find a place to nurse a cup of coffee. Yet the camaraderie of the Greyhound is hanging on. I recently completed the road trip of a lifetime. I wanted to take this time to think deeply about our overreliance on cars and our love affair with the open road.
The bus had just turned onto the highway and left the Miami skyline behind when my seatmate started coursing through customary greetings. When I told him I was headed all the way to Seattle, he was bewildered. Everyone in my life agreed. Riding one of the longest Greyhound routes in the US during my college spring break was a wild idea. But I had two main reasons to take the trip: to see the American countryside through a new lens, which turned out to be smudged bus windows, and to meet people I probably wouldn't interact with otherwise. Every station I visited had a bathroom, but many of the stalls were out of toilet paper.

From looking at the map, I believe that these are the furthest possible routes you could possibly take:. Looking at their route map , I tried to look up Yellowknife, NT, but the fares must be extremely limited. The longest Greyhound rides seem to take you all the way from one tip of the country to the opposite corner. Looking at the Greyhound schedule, it appears that the best time to book Greyhound is just about a month before your actual trip. I think that Greyhound is potentially a great alternative if you can bear with sitting on a bus for potentially days. The bus station consisted of a parking garage the size of a small airplane hangar. The only direct Greyhound bus you can book from Albuquerque to Vegas takes a minimum of 21 hours and does a bizarre route via San Bernardino. I would take another Greyhound bus in the future but don't plan on repeating the cross-country trip. Everyone in my life agreed. From St Louis to Albuquerque, I had over 1, miles to cover. You never quite know on a Greyhound. By the end of the three days, I had eaten over 15 packs of peanut-butter crackers, 10 granola bars, three Clif bars, a bag of chips, a bag of Cheez-Its, six Reese's peanut-butter cups, a McDonald's Quarter Pounder, three chicken tenders, a turkey-and-cheese sandwich, and a bag of Dot's cinnamon-sugar pretzels. I walked to a cafe where I very slowly nursed a cup of chamomile tea as part of my near-dehydration diet which had managed so far to keep me from having to use a bathroom on the bus.

I made it to Seattle in about three days and paid less than what most plane tickets cost for an experience I'll never forget. The air was choked with exhaust. Greyhound buses are by no means luxurious, but they made me slow down and recognize the world and landscapes around me. Miles, this just occurred to me.
