Apr Posted by Metro Girl. Impressive: Some runners completed the course in heavy, large costumes. Today was my first London Marathon experience… and what an amazing day it was. One of my best and oldest friends was running her first marathon for Cancer Research UK in memory of her mother, who sadly lost her battle with cancer last year. As soon as she signed up to do the marathon, I knew I was going to be there cheering her on by hell or high water. It is undeniably a long day covering a large space of London.

The London Marathon was the 33rd running of the annual marathon race in London , England, which took place on Sunday, 21 April. Australian Kurt Fearnley won the men's wheelchair race, while American Tatyana McFadden won the women's wheelchair race with a new course record of Around , people applied to enter the race: 48, had their applications accepted and 34, started the race. After the Boston Marathon bombings six days before the London Marathon, organisers issued a statement announcing that the event's security—which is jointly planned with the Metropolitan Police —would be reviewed. The London Marathon began with a second moment of silence in honour of the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. Through the halfway mark of the men's race, the leaders were on world record pace. At that point, Great Britain's Mo Farah withdrew from the race, as he had planned. The pace dropped off after that and Emmanuel Mutai of Kenya built a large lead. In the final kilometre of the race, Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia surged past Mutai to win the men's marathon with a time of two hours, six minutes and four seconds. At the kilometre 9.

Tens of thousands of runners have taken part in the London Marathon, with a second silence at the start and black ribbons worn as solidarity with those affected by the Boston bombs. It was lovely to see such a widespread mood of excitement and friendliness — something us Londoners have been accused of lacking by visitors. Search by image or video.
