Windows operating systems automatically apply a generic driver that allows users to benefit from basic touch functions; however, advanced features will not be available until the proper files are installed.

Connect and share knowledge within a single location that is structured and easy to search. I downloaded a new touchpad driver from the Lenovo support website. It said it was for Synaptics, Elan, Alps. I clicked to install, and it looked like it was going to install Synaptics, which is what I want; but the text was cut off so I wasn't sure. No choice was made available. I've checked around on this site, especially the suggested questions that appeared as I typed this question, and tried going to the device manager and picking a driver to update. This was my situation with Lenovo Edge Windows 10 Synaptics driver.

A pointing stick or trackpoint , also referred to generically as a nub or nipple is a small analog stick used as a pointing device typically mounted centrally in a computer keyboard. Like other pointing devices such as mice , touchpads or trackballs , operating system software translates manipulation of the device into movements of the pointer on the computer screen. Unlike other pointing devices, it reacts to sustained force or strain rather than to gross movement, so it is called an "isometric" [1] pointing device. IBM introduced it commercially in on its laptops under the name "TrackPoint", and patented an improved version of it in but the patent expired in The pointing stick senses applied force by using two pairs of resistive strain gauges. A pointing stick can be used by pushing with the fingers in the general direction the user wants the pointer to move. The velocity of the pointer depends on the applied force so increasing pressure causes faster movement. The relation between pressure and pointer speed can be adjusted, just as mouse speed is adjusted. The mouse buttons can be operated right-handed or left-handed due to their placement below the keyboard along the centerline. Pointing sticks typically have a replaceable rubber cap, called a nub, which can be a slightly rough "eraser head" material or another shape. The cap is red on ThinkPads, but is also found in other colors on other machines. Button configurations vary depending on vendor and laptop model. ThinkPads have a prominent middle mouse button, but some models have no physical buttons.

March 11, Ask a new question. I was searching for information on reversing the direction of the touchpad scrolling. I came across information on a thread here about updating drivers. After doing so and restarting my computer, the touchpad stopped working completely. When I tried to go back and update the drivers again, the touchpad was completely missing from the Device Manager before doing so I attached a wireless mouse and am currently using that. That device is listed as the only device under 'mice and other pointing devices'. Was this reply helpful?
