As the name of the film suggests, Laputa is an immense castle floating on an island in the sky. The opening credits showcase the development of the technology by which this is possible. The film's protagonist, Pazu , has a photograph his father took when he glimpsed the almost mythical place. Because his father died still trying to prove Laputa's existence, Pazu dreams of finding it and proving his father right. Along with Sheeta , a young girl who is the rightful heir to the throne of Laputa, Pazu eventually succeeds in his goal. However, thanks to the pursuit of Captain Dola and her gang of air pirates , and government agent Colonel Muska , and the subsequent events that take place there, much of the structure of Laputa is destroyed. The remaining, natural part of the island floats away to drift over the Earth undisturbed.

Castle in the Sky is the first film to be animated by Studio Ghibli, with a production team comprising many of Miyazaki's longtime collaborators, who would continue to work with the studio for the following three decades. The studio's intent was to create original feature films without any compromise of quality. While Laputa is technologically advanced, much of its technology is closely intertwined with nature this becomes increasingly apparent as the characters explore Laputa, which is actually built around an enormous tree that serves as a base for the entire city. In fact, the Laputians had such an intimate relationship with nature that their robots which are proven to be highly indestructible and highly effective as tools of war are tasked with guarding and protecting nature. The robots only show their destructive capacities in response to human brutality.
Miyazaki, who was forced to raise funds due to delays in the production of Isao Takahata 's film The Story of Yanagawa's Canals , proposed this film after consulting Toshio Suzuki , who worked for Tokuma Shoten.
