The Mikaelson family became the world's first vampires after their youngest brother, Henrik, was slaughtered by a pack of werewolves during a full moon. This prompted their mother, hailed as the Original Witch, to take drastic measures. Using her magic, she and her husband Mikael created a way to turn their remaining children into a new species that would be stronger than the wolves. Kol and his other siblings are then forcibly turned into a vampire by their own father. Throughout his natural life, Kol struggled with his status in the family, believing that his siblings considered him to be a nuisance.
