Turkey is a beautiful country, is culturally diverse, the people are friendly, and it has a long, karalar group, fascinating history: it is home. Skip to content.

Starting with my undergraduate education at Bilkent University, I have been involved in biomedical research. I completed my PhD in the laboratory of Matthew Welch at UC Berkeley, where I focused on the characterization of actin polymerization pathways in cells. During my postdoctoral studies in the laboratory of Tim Stearns at Stanford University, I took a multidisciplinary approach to identify the centriole proteome and address the interactions among centrosome proteins. My postgraduate research in the laboratory of Dr Julie Welburn incorporated both cell biology and biochemical methods and focused on the regulation of microtube-associated proteins and microtubule organization in mitosis. During a short post as the CALM Facility manager in Edinburgh, I have acquired additional expertise in the advanced microscopy techniques. Here, I am working on the exciting project, which combines advanced microscopy, biochemistry and proximity labelling methods to understand the role of specific centriolar satellite proteins in primary and motile cilia formation and function.

Journal Metrics. Publication Frequency. Although the Semantic Web offers many opportunities for learners, effects of it in the classroom is not well known. Therefore, in this study explanations have been stated as how the learning objects defined by means of using the terminology in a developed ontology and kept in objects repository should be presented to learners with the aim of facilitating significant learning through a pedagogical agent developed in the light of cognitive theories, and subsequently the effects of Semantic Web Based Learning SWBL on the learning performance and satisfaction of pre-service teachers in Information and Communication Technologies ICT course are explored. This study employed the quasi-experimental research method, and the participants were 98 pre-service teachers. The study results indicated the following: a regarding learning achievements, pre-service teachers who learned via the SWBL demonstrated higher learning performance than pre-service teachers who received the TT; b on the learning satisfaction survey, pre-service teachers who learned via the SWBL were largely satisfied with the SWBL that was designed purposefully for this study. Theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed. To make sure that you can receive messages from us, please add the 'redfame. Cell scientist to watch — Elif Nur Firat-Karalar. J Cell Sci 1 October ; 19 : jcs During her postdoctoral work in the laboratory of Tim Stearns at Stanford University, she used proteomics approaches and identified the centriole proteome and proximity interactome that revealed novel regulatory pathways for centriole biogenesis. My father is an engineer. He's the first college graduate in the family so I can't say science is part of our family tradition. I started thinking about biology as a career alternative when I was chosen to participate in a Biology Olympiad team in high school.

Given the emerging roles of the inner scaffold in centriole integrity and size control, we then used U-ExM to assess how CCDC15 depletion impacts these processes. CCDC15 loss compromised centriole size and integrity, resulting in defective ciliogenesis and Hedgehog signaling. The workshop was directed towards researchers in the life sciences who apply or need to apply the light microscopy imaging and analysis techniques to solve biological problems at the cellular and molecular level in vitro and in vivo. There were about participants from 63 different universities, hospitals and research institutions in Turkey. KUSIM aims to enable researchers to visualize samples with nanometer resolution with high speed and in multiple colors and facilitate multidisciplinary and multi-institutional research in translational imaging , especially in the area of cancer and developmental disorders. With the SatelliteHomeostasis Grant, we will continue dissecting the fascinating biology of centriolar satellites by building upon results from the ERC StG project as well as on the new preliminary data on centriolar satellite heterogeneity. We will leverage the complexity of centriolar satellites to address questions in organelle plasticity and membrane-less compartmentalization.

Types of properties. Simply working with great scientists and mentors like Matt and Tim, and now also with my EMBO mentor Monica Bettencourt-Dias Instituto Gulbenkian, Oeiras, Portugal was and is really influential to me — just watching them do their science, how they mentor and care about people in the lab. There are many benefits to publishing in Journal of Cell Science - read more about why you should choose JCS or visit our submission page now. Going to conferences helps you to realize that people are there for you — for the sake of science, for sharing the common scientific interest. We investigate how centrosomes and cilia assemble and function in response to different stimuli or across different cell types. What questions are your lab trying to answer just now? I'm very happy that I took the job and moved, although in a country like Turkey, any fluctuation in politics or the economy has a bigger impact on your research than it is the case in big research countries like the USA. It's hard moving from Turkey to let's say… Cornell. This is huge and it also makes you realize how much support you should give to your own people in the lab or to other investigators. In addition, I am also working on another project related to a microtubule associated protein and its effects during mitosis. Ekin Su Erdem, Master Student. Floors 7. Submit your abstract by 5 April. For Business. I experienced different research topics during my undergraduate studies such as computational biology and cancer but I was always interested in the cytoskeleton, so I started working in the Cytoskeleton Research Lab in

.

By studying centriolar satellite dynamics, distribution, functions and the proteome, we have seen differences in all these aspects depending on the tissue context. Journal Help. Although I didn't know which specific research questions I wanted to pursue during my undergrad time, I realized I wanted to study cell biology when I rotated to Matthew Welch's lab at UC Berkeley. Cited by Google Scholar. Ece Seyrek, Master Student. A perfect synergy People. Currently, I am utilizing the chemically inducible satellite trafficking assay to study the specific and temporal functions of centriolar satellites with microscopy and proximity labeling methods. Playground Yes. How do you get the most out of the meetings you attend, particularly in the early stages of your career? In Matt's lab, one of the first experiments I performed was live imaging of neutrophils migrating towards a chemo-attractant and it was just amazing: watching directed migration happen under the microscope and wondering how it would be achieved. After graduation, I have been working as a postdoctoral researcher in the lab. Also, in , Turkey was investing a lot in research and there was real support for starting your own group. Ilgin Kisioglu, Undergraduate Researcher.
