In an era when movies are again turning to classic literature for inspiration, it was only a matter of time before a new version of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre reached the screen. One of the best-loved of all the Victorian novels, Jane Eyre combines social commentary with gothic romance. This new film, directed by Franco Zeffirelli best known for his Oscar-nominated Romeo and Juliet , remains faithful to the original narrative in general, if not in all the particulars. Of necessity, the story has been condensed, since it isn't possible to reproduce a full-length book as a two-hour movie. Screenwriters Zeffirelli and Hugh Whitemore have elected to retain Jane Eyre 's full scope while elimiting many of the nuances. The result is a reasonably fast-paced story with a confused sense of time that occasionally struggles to develop its characters to their maximum potential. We are introduced to ten-year old Jane Anna Paquin in the early s at Gateshead Hall, where she lives with her aunt and cousins. Orphaned at an early age, Jane has grown up unloved and unloving, and now her aunt has decided to send her to the Lowood Charity School, citing her as willful, obstinate, deceitful, and in need of a stern upbringing. At Lowood, Jane finds life difficult under the tutelage of the cold-hearted Mr. Brocklehurst John Wood and Miss Scatcherd Geraldine Chaplin , but she forms a pair of solid friendships that help her through the hardest times. After ten years at Lowood, an older, wiser, but still-spirited Jane now played by Charlotte Gainsbourg accepts a position as governess for the young French ward of Edward Rochester William Hurt , master of Thornfield Hall. Jane settles in quickly, forming solid relationships with her charge, Adele Varens Josephine Serre , and Thornfield's housekeeper, Mrs. Fairfax Joan Plowright. However, the master of the house makes the strongest impression on the young woman.

Twenty-one-year-old Australian-born Mia Wasikowska gives a self-possessed performance in the leading role: her Jane addresses the audience and her employer with the same limpid, even gaze. Wasikowska carries off the bonnets and the middle-parting and fiercely self-deprecatory references to her own plainness as only a sensationally beautiful film star can. Her north country accent, incidentally, is far superior to Anne Hathaway's. But like many Hollywood stars for whom Britspeak is not the mother tongue, this is achieved with slowness and control. The plot is configured in flashback form. Orphaned, cruelly treated as a child, beaten and humiliated, Jane has endured a brutal boarding school run with lavish Christian hypocrisy, and finally fetches up as a governess in Thornfield Hall, a remote house in the Yorkshire Peak District, teaching a precocious little French girl, a position that showcases Jane's fluent and idiomatic command of the language. But she is to be not the mistress but rather the pupil, of sorts, to the master of the house. This is the glowering, charismatic and secretly tortured Mr Rochester, that extraordinary creation who is ancestor of Daphne Du Maurier's Maxim De Winter and second cousin to Count Dracula.

Gothic romance attracts us with a deep tidal force. Part of its appeal is the sense of ungovernable eroticism squirming to escape from just beneath the surface. Its chaste heroines and dark brooding heroes prowl the gloomy shadows of crepuscular castles, and doomy secrets stir in the corners. Charlotte's Bronte's Jane Eyre is among the greatest of gothic novels, a page turner of such startling power, it leaves its pale latter-day imitators like Twilight flopping for air like a stranded fish. To be sure, the dark hero of the story, Rochester, is not a vampire, but that's only a technicality. The tension in the genre is often generated by a virginal girl's attraction to a dangerous man. The more pitiful and helpless the heroine the better, but she must also be proud and virtuous, brave and idealistic. Her attraction to the ominous hero must be based on pity, not fear; he must deserve her idealism. The film opens with Jane Eyre fearfully fleeing across the bleak moors, where even nature conspires against her. This is not the opening we expect, with Jane already fully grown, but later in flashbacks, we'll be reminded of her Dickensian girlhood, her cruel aunt, her sadistic boarding school, and her need as a girl without means to earn her own way as a governess.

Zeffirelli's picture fits nicely into the recent spate of films based on classic novels. A word of caution to those who may prefer action movies and plots that rush along at ten thousand miles per hour: This is a thought-provoking film and an intriguing mystery, and while there is a touch of the thrilling, it is NOT an action movie, and there are no swords. Jane is not true to character, and she is way too submissive. As an aside though, something I've noted in general about adaptations of novels is that there isn't always a close correlation between cleaving to the narrative and dialogue of a novel, and the characterization actors' affect, performances, context, etc , which highlights the influence the director, actors and others have and thus can put a very different spin on the finished product.
