I understand some of the frustrations with this movie, largely because of the trailer, and the fact that it was advertised to me as a horror thriller, far from it, it's a meaningful story about the end of life as we know it, one woman's challenge, and her handling of change when a man appears. Very visual, it has some poignant scenes, I particularly liked the decayed and rotten streets and buildings, they looked incredible. There are multiple messages here, I appreciate that in amongst the many negative ones, there is one that shines through the whole way through, human spirit. Was this review helpful?

Io Capitano is a Homeric fairy tale that tells the adventurous journey of two young boys, Seydou and Moussa, who leave Dakar to reach Europe. A modern Odyssey through the dangers of the desert, the sea and the ambiguities of the human soul. The film stars newcomers Seydou Sarr and Moustapha Fall. This incredible film is one of these examples of filmmaking where I just have no idea how they pulled off and filmed certain jaw-dropping scenes, it's all so astonishing to watch. It's also Italy's submission for Best International Film at the 96th Academy Awards, with a full release US coming in early after the nominations are revealed. Keep an eye out for this one. Cannes darling Matteo Garrone " Gomorrah " turns his best intentions towards following two Senegalese immigrants on the dangerous trip across Africa and into Italy. Cousins Seydou Seydou Sarr and Moussa Moustapha Fall are innocents who are in over their heads from the moment they leave their home in Dakar, falling victim to both human corruption and the indifferent cruelty of nature. So many bad things happen to Seydou and Moussa — a sequence set in a North African prison is especially upsetting, but the whole journey is merciless — that any moment of respite is also full of tension, as the viewer waits for more bad things to happen.

I think the problem is it that it's moody and dark. Ok, so there are some clear scientific issues, and occasional signs of low budget shots There are long stretches where you can look away for thirty minutes and not miss a single thing.
