As the twentieth century dawned, John Milton Imes, a merchant in Calloway County, saw that families experiencing the death of a loved one carried the burden of arrangements for burial and services, as well as the burden of their grief and loss. He realized that third party assistance would allow these families the time and opportunity to properly mourn. On September 7, , John Imes opened a funeral home in the upstairs portion of his Almo general store. The Kentucky State Board, at its inception in , licensed Mr. Imes' commitment to respect, compassion, and family budgets is the same commitment that the Imes family holds today. The former name of that facility, Imes-Miller, refers to Thelma Miller, former matriarch of the business, who remained a part of it until her death at age 95 in The funeral home was reacquired by the Imes family in , when Kenny and Mary Beth Imes purchased the business. An offsite crematory was added to expand service options in In , Matt and his wife, Wendy, purchased the funeral home from his parents and now operate both the downtown Murray and the Heritage Chapel, across from Coldwater Rd. Today, sixth generation funeral service provider, Matt Imes along with wife, Wendy Imes, parents, Kenny and Mary Beth Imes, brother, John Imes, Janus Vilardo, Carmen Garland, Patrick Morris and Bill Marcum continue to serve, support and elevate local families with the same sensitivity, compassion and respect, that John Milton Imes envisioned well over a century ago.
