Sign In. First Man Hide Spoilers. Bemused at the reviews of "boring" or "too long". This is not Apollo 13 or The Right Stuff, and is not meant to be. It is a character study based on a book James R Hansen which is a biography of Neil Armstrong, rather than a story of the moon landing per se. Of course the movie is going to show the moon landing, and the events which lead up to it, but these are just part of what the movie is about. We see how hard it is to be a test pilot then astronaut. The launches and flights are seen from Neil's perspective, his visceral experience of being on top of a missile smashing into space. These scenes are not spectacular, in the Apollo 13 sense, but dark, claustrophobic, noisy and confusing, like it really was. A lot of people who perhaps were brought up on super-hero Hollywood movies cannot seem to relate to the portrayal an actual human being matter of factly doing things which are so far beyond normal. So we have the usual morons complaining about the fact that Armstrong doesn't smile enough or have anything witty to say while he is fighting for his life, you know, like they do in the movies. This level of immature stupidity is beyond my ken, so I'll just say just don't watch it.

They expend most of their mental energy studying the instrument panels in front of them and trying to process the information that's being fed through their headsets by mission control, knowing that one missed fact or wrong choice could mean their deaths. To do this kind of work, you have to be the bravest person on earth, or have a death wish. This blockbuster drama from director Damien Chazelle " Whiplash ," " La La Land " and screenwriter Josh Singer " Spotlight ," " The Post " implies that there might not be a lot of difference, and that if there is, the astronauts aren't the people to explain it, because they're steeped in a tradition that forbids admitting you even have feelings, much less discussing them. Neil, a handsome but tight-lipped test pilot in the mold of Sam Shepard's Chuck Yeager from "The Right Stuff," enrolls in the Apollo program in part because he wants to be distracted from the pain of losing his two-year-old daughter Karen to cancer.

When Nasa puts out the call for trainee astronauts, his successful application seems to offer a new start. Time and again, cinematographer Linus Sandgren frames him alone amid the darkened spaces of the Armstrong home — the camera gazing through doors, halls and hatchways that paint a black shroud around his softly illuminated figure. Brilliantly, Sandgren uses handheld 16mm for the up-close-and-personal scenes and 35mm for the industrial Nasa sequences, shifting to the stark Imax clarity of 65mm for the expansive silence of the moonscapes where Armstrong can finally confront his awful loss.
