Las direcciones intercardinales primarias o direcciones ordinales son las direcciones colocadas equitativamente entre cada una de las cuatro direcciones cardinales. Estos son norte-noroeste, norte-noreste, sur-suroeste, sur-sureste, oeste-noroeste, este-noreste, oeste-suroeste y este-sureste. La Rosa de los Vientos se divide en 4 cuadrantes en el sentido de las agujas del reloj y cada uno de los 32 rumbos tiene una diferencia de 10 grados por lo que si se suman todos los rumbos, tendremos los grados de la rosa de los vientos. A diferencia de los vientos, en los que solo hay 8 nombres principales, con las estrellas pasa lo contrario. Aunque hay 8 de ellas que son las principales y que aparecen en la foto de arriba , existe una correspondencia por cada una de los rumbos en la Rosa de los Vientos de 32 puntos o 32 rumbos.
