It follows the struggle of a mother to reconnect with her daughter who has been traumatized by the death of her father. It finally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival , where it was acquired by Miramax Films for theatrical distribution that June. Following the death of her archeologist husband, Ruth Matthews moves her family back to their house in a quiet suburb , hoping to put the past behind them. While her son Michael is able to adapt, her young daughter Sally, is apparently traumatized by the experience and starts displaying unusual behavior, including building an elaborate tower from playing cards and photographs. Ruth is later court mandated to see Jake Beerlander, an expert in child autism, to help Sally. Michael Lessac originally developed the script as a father-daughter drama, but rewrote it as a mother-daughter story for his friend Kathleen Turner.

The film opens in Mexico, where her parents are scientists studying ancient ruins. Then her father falls off a ruin and is killed. An old mystic tells the girl that dead people go to live on the moon, and that if she is very quiet, she can hear them. She refuses to speak. When small changes are made in her environment, she makes loud, ugly noises. There seems to be no way to reach her - not even after her mother takes her to a clinic run by Tommy Lee Jones , who diagnoses autism.

As Sally's condition worsens, Ruth takes her to see Jake, an expert in childhood autism. Jake attempts to bring Sally out of her mental disarray through traditional therapy methods, but Ruth takes a different route. She risks her own sanity by attempting to enter her daughter's mind and make sense of the seemingly bizarre things that Sally does, including building a wondrous house of cards.
