The CBRF4i is one of those cult sport bikes, a Goldilocks of sorts between sports performance and everyday comfort that has somehow stood the test of time without anything quite taking its place. In the late eighties and through the nineties, Honda launched and iterated on its series of sportbikes for the everyday person — the Honda CBRF series. What changed? How is the F4 different to the F4i? Well, I am. I love learning and sharing what others might find useful. People often tune this out with a Dynojet Power Commander module. We all thought fuel injection would get better over time, but as emissions regulations get tougher, so does it get tougher to keep a fuel-injected engine from being twitchy! Even the CBRRR is pretty comfortable, but it got things like upside-down forks after a couple of years and a higher powerband that pushed it a bit more into track territory. Basically, the CBRF4i was at this sweet nexus point where sportbikes were still comfortable, and yet just was modern enough to have fuel injection. What do those specs mean?

In , the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer launched the Honda CBRF4i, an upgraded version of the CBRF4 that was first introduced in and featured numerous engine, chassis, and bodywork modifications. The Honda CBRF4i was in its second year of production with the new F4i name and came in the same package as the model that included a new subframe, which raised the seat by five mm allowing more storage room and improved tow-up seat. Also, the bike packed a new instrument cluster that included a large analog tachometer and an LCD with a speedometer, odometer, clock, engine temperature read-out, and trip meters. In addition, the bike packed a smaller taillight with a new dual-bulb configuration. One of the largest improvements was the Programmed Fuel Injection PGM-FI system which allowed for more precise fuel metering and delivery over a wider rpm range, better throttle response, and reduced emissions. In the appearance department, the CBRF4i was dressed in a new bodywork with a more racy look that provided a three percent reduction in drag force, a front cowl with a new dual headlight that used H7 bulbs instead of the H4 used by the previous model, and mirrors repositioned higher and closer to the rider. The model was built around a twin-spar aluminum frame and housed a revised suspension that included a 43 mm fully-adjustable cartridge-type fork on the front and a fully-adjustable gas-charged Pro-Link shock absorber on the rear.

Of course, the class is the most competitive street bike class there is, and Honda now has fierce competition from all of its Japanese rivals, as well as Triumph.
