This post will contain heavy late game spoilers , so it's best to ignore this if you haven't played Hollow Knight yet. I'm just talking about a part of my personal journey through the game here, which is all about an area that I found very atmospheric, but also slightly annoying: the Abyss. Hollow Knight is all about diving deeper into the world of Hallownest and once you've reached the Ancient Basement you already feel like you've reached the bottom. That is until you open the door into the Abyss, where you descend into the darkest depths of Hallownest. The enemies down there are very basic, with the Shadow Creepers and Shades, but the atmosphere is so oppressing that it can leave a mark on you. I will never forget the first time I went down there, not knowing what awaited me, all shrouded in black fogs and droning noises.

The Abyss is a Location in Hollow Knight. Please see Walkthrough for other areas. The Abyss lies beneath the Ancient Basin where a huge amount of corpses of the failed vessels and their shades can be found. It is also the home of the Void and the birthplace of the vessels. To return to the entrance of The Abyss, you'll have to make your way back to the Ancient Basin. At this point, you should have acquired the King's Brand after fighting Hornet for the second time in Kingdom's Edge. Once you've arrived, approach the door and it will open. There is a charm that you can acquire in this area which is the Lifeblood Core charm. But in order to open the door, you'll need to use a bench then equip the Lifeblood Heart and Joni's Blessing charms in order to obtain 15 Lifeblood Masks. Just make sure you don't take any damage while heading to The Abyss.

But what awaits you isn't so bad.

Drop down about one third of the way down the Abyss and then jump across to the left wall. You should drop down to the Lifeblood door entrance. Found along the path leading to Greenpath. He is held in the mandibles of a Vengefly King, and the Knight has the choice to either save him or leave him. If saved, he complains that the Knight got in the way between him and his "prey", he introduces himself and boasts about his supposed mighty deeds. If he is saved in Greenpath, Zote shows up in Dirtmouth, where he once again talks to the Knight in an arrogant fashion.
