Possibly the hardest decision in not only Dragon Age: Inquisitionbut perhaps the entire Dragon Age series past and future or Bioware games in general, is choosing between saving Hawke hawke or stroud stays the Warden. An arch demon appears, destroys a tower, and the entire party falls to what would certainly have been their deaths had the Inquisitor not been able to open a rift to the fade.

For players that had Alistair as a warden in Dragon Age: Inquisition , they faced an incredibly hard decision in the main quest Here Lies the Abyss. They had to choose between Hawke and Alistair, leaving behind one of them in the Fade and knowing they will not make it out. For a lot of fans, especially those that romanced Alistair, this is one of the most difficult choices to make in the series. The choice has created a lot of discussion in the Dragon Age fandom, with players debating on which character is more needed by Thedas and which will be missed more by companions. Some also believe the text to be ambiguous enough that whoever stays behind may not actually be dead. Many stick to more emotional reasoning from the previous two while others choose more on the basis of role-playing the Inquisitor and choosing based on whom they would pick.

Alistair or Loghain are there instead of Shroud if either of them are still Grey Wardens, so it can also be a matter of choosing between major characters. If you side with Hawke, Varric greatly approves. Siding with the warden, Varric disapproves. But if you banish the wardens after you sacrifice Hawke, Varric approves.

I did the last fade battle several times because the first time through I left Hawke so that Stroud could help rebuild the wardens, but when Varric ran up to me asking where Hawke was, it broke my heart. Some even pointed out that they have Bethany or Carver as Grey Wardens, which would make Hawke extra protective of the Grey Wardens and not wish to see them sacrificed.
