The planning and hoped for results with hafler audio of our mods will depend, to some degree, on the underlying health of the original amp. Consider these helpful improvements. We have given short shrift to these amps so let us begin to remedy that. The kit prices are same, but some amps require more labor, i, hafler audio.
David Hafler February 7, — May 25, was an American audio engineer. He was best known for his work on an improved version of the Williamson amplifier using the ultra-linear circuit of Alan Blumlein. In , Hafler founded Acrosound with his colleague Herbert Keroes. This company was primarily in the business of designing and manufacturing transformers for tube amplifiers. Around this time Hafler and Keroes popularized the ultra-linear output-stage for audio amplifiers.

TA THX, rare more expensive Are there any underrated gems or sleepers in this list? How do these compare to the cheaper Adcoms, e. Or the older Brystons 2B, 4B? The ones made in China. Nothing against China, but these are their low cost crappy models. I think any of the P series are particularly well respected for studio use. John L Rice. I'm familiar with the DH and P series Haflers, as well as the Adcom and currently use a Bryston 3B, all of which I consider to be professional grade reference amplifiers suitable for studio monitoring. As for which is best, it's difficult to qualify an answer since not all amps were used on the same speakers, but I chose the 3B for its neutrality. All the others gave me the impression that they were sweetening the bottom end a bit, which may be incorrect because of using different speakers like I said. Another amp I'll add to that bang-for-the-buck list is the Nikko Alpha series, apparently a minor mod to the negative feedback circuitry makes them dead-ringers for Brystons. I used an unmodded Alpha for a while, again suitable but not quite as transparent as the 3B. If possible, you should really bring your monitors to a shop that carries Hafler and Bryston for a taste-test. The one that designed the direct-coupled tube amps for electrostatics, which blew up and shot pieces of glass around the room?
See prices below. Any others? I used an unmodded Alpha for a while, again suitable but not quite as transparent as the 3B, hafler audio.
The Hafler circuit is a passive electronics circuit with the aim of getting derived surround sound or ambiophony from regular stereo recordings without using costly electronics. Such circuits are generally known as matrix decoders. The Dynaquad system works using similar principles. Named after its early proponent audio engineer David Hafler , the circuit exploits the high amount of stereo separation between Left and Right channels and sound phase. The rear channels will playback out of phase sounds, while the forward channels are unaffected. Using the circuit typically reduces stereo separation by only about 2 dB and the rear speakers are only required to reproduce a limited frequency range allowing them to be smaller and cheaper.
Amazingly, its clear, three-dimensional sound is comparable to many amplifiers made today. McIntosh MC While the MC put the signature big blue meters in the market, many people consider this the greatest amplifier ever made. Released in as the MI for commercial applications, it eclipsed any amplifier of the day with an extraordinary watts per channel. The consumer version, MC established McIntosh as the premier audio company of the day. Phase Linear It was and Bob Carver saw the future and brought to market a product that would set the stage for a new audio segment—affordable, mass-market, high-performance audio. Rock bands put dry ice on stacks of these legendary watt per channel amps to cool them down.

As every audiophile knows, David Hafler is a hi-fi legend. In he founded Dynaco and soon became a household name. The Dynaco ST, one of the best-selling amplifiers of all time it sold more than , units in its lifespan —and considered one of the greatest classic amps—needs no introduction. Ditto the beloved Dyna-Kits, affordable ready-to-assemble kits for building preamplifiers and power amps that also proved very popular, even ubiquitous, during the s and 60s. Fast-forward to Hafler has been reintroduced to the hi-fi market under the auspices of Radial Engineering Ltd. Because Radial had served as the former Canadian distributor for Hafler, it already had intimate knowledge of the Hafler brand and its products. Although the company has also released a line of headphone amps this year, its new compact phonostages and step-up transformers are the inaugural products in the Dynaco-Hafler relaunch. In addition to the PH60 moving-coil phonostage under review here, the PH50 moving-magnet phonostage and two phono step-up transformers, the PH34 31dB gain and PH44 20dB gain , comprise the rest of the first offerings.

In the current scenario the DH was to replace the Citation Twelve Deluxe, a power amp that we have come to enjoy. Voices are clear, full-bodied and so intelligible that emotion is conveyed in the performances at a new level. By the way, the later "Hafler" amps are not Hafler amps at all. William Sommerwerck. The rear ambient sounds, applause, and coughs from the audience are sometimes received out of phase by the stereo microphones, while sounds from the musicians mostly are in synchronous phase. Quadraphonic sound. Ed Gately owned the company. Clean extended top, big dynamics, beautifully focused spacious sound stage. I wonder if the is worth the extra money? Scott Dorsey. The newer Transnovas aren't really Haflers at all. Subscribers will receive regular updates with links to the newest audiophile reviews and articles on eiaudio.

Toggle limited content width. In Hafler founded Dynaco with Ed Laurent. The Elite version does a tremendous job. Contents move to sidebar hide. Thus, if rear speakers are fed with the difference between the stereo channels, audience noises and reverberation from the auditorium may be heard from behind the listener. You want to hear instruments in a striking, natural way. And although there were lots of interesting discoveries to be made, somehow the devices did not strike a chord with us to the extent that we actually wanted to own them. Full PA They also need only a minimum of compensation. I always get a chuckle out of Scott's encyclopedic knowledge of tragic equipment failures. Voices are clear, full-bodied and so intelligible that emotion is conveyed in the performances at a new level. From my own experience I know that the DH can be quite a princess, in the sense that it does not play with everybody. Many receivers from middle price brands had such circuits, but often without a volume control for the rear channels. May 25, aged 84 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , US.
