Adam Warlock made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 but who is he and what is his role in the comics?

The following contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. There, the character is extremely powerful, matching his comic book counterpart in the strength department. Unfortunately, this and his appearance are about where the similarities end. Adam Warlock characterization in the new James Gunn movie is essentially an overgrown petulant child. This puts him at odds with his portrayal in the comics as a much sterner, wiser character. In fact, the comic book version was instrumental in the storyline that inspired Avengers: Infinity War , making his changes even more noticeable. What was once a major cosmic character is now a mere lackey who's portrayed far differently.

Adam Warlock is a major supporting character in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Once a friend to Grand Unifier Raker and blessed with divine-like power, Adam is the former "golden god" worshipped by the Universal Church of Truth until his presumed death during the Galactic War. Not much is known about Adam Warlock's past though it is rumoured that he was found in a cocoon floating through space. One day, Adam came across Raker and his crew, who had come across a plague. Adam agreed to help them, healing them as the followers of Adam began growing. Unfortunately, the darkness hidden within the Soul Stone that would become the Magus grew within Adam, urging him to destroy all creation and feed on Raker's crew. However, Adam knew that he had to remove the Stone and asked Raker to remove it. During the operation, Raker managed to free Adam from the Stone, but took its power and harnessed it to establish the Universal Church of Truth and conquer the galaxy. At some point, Adam Warlock was involved in the Galactic War and was presumed dead, but it was revealed that he went into hiding instead. Adam is a noble and virtuous, yet rather pompous being. He generally speaks in a highly formal and verbose fashion that makes heavy use of alliteration. Adam seems to somewhat share the belief of his former followers in his divinity even referring to himself as a god on one occasion.

If he emerges too soon, he will be less intelligent and less powerful. Next, Groot jumped down and toppled Adam.

Adam joined his mother Ayesha on a trip to Counter-Earth to retrieve Rocket under threat of Sovereign extinction, although High Evolutionary destroyed the planet, killing Ayesha in the process. Adam eventually tried to attack High Evolutionary's ship but failed yet again and was rescued by Groot. In redemption, Adam later saved Star-Lord from dying in space and joined the new Guardians roster under Rocket's leadership.
