As the flower's aroma attracts female apes, guardian ape, he carefully tends to it, hoping to offer it his new mate. The Ape also has a connection to the Sculptor from the latter's younger days when he trained in the Sunken Valley.
A massive white monkey with a large katana sticking through his neck, Guardian Ape lies at the end of the Sunken Valley. Be sure to bring some Pacifying Agent for the second stage of this boss fight. This ape is a measured test of endurance. In Phase 1 the Guardian Ape will circle around you waiting for the opportune moment to strike. After finally depleting all of his health and getting the deathblow by using the sword in his neck to chop off his head, you may think the fight is over. Suddenly his beheaded body gets up and grabs both the sword and his severed head. So now that the monkey is attacking you headless with a sword how should you approach it?

The worst mistake you can make in Sekiro is attacking without a plan. Bosses are happy to disrupt your attacks and cause major damage. You have to be clever to get through it without wasting a lot of time, energy, and swigs from your Healing Gourd, though. Since this is a spear-based boss, the skill that will be most useful is the Mikiri Counter. Spend some time with Hanbei the Undying back at the Dilapidated Temple to get comfortable with the timing.

After spending 3 evenings finally learning how to parry against Genichiro, this guy actually felt like a pushover. On the first play through it is a real pain but once you know what you're doing it's a very fun boss. You cannot unlock the Phoenix lilac umbrella until you get the finger after defeating this boss. This phase is surprisingly different: the Ape is now classed as an Apparition-type enemy, so Firecrackers don't work but Divine Confetti and the like do - although we don't find it makes a huge difference, honestly.
