No contestant wants to hear the loud buzzing sound of the red X that halts their performance, golden buzzer. Back then, however, it had a different meaning.
Each judge may press their Golden Buzzer only once during the season However each judge was permitted to press it twice in Fantasy League , once in the Preliminaries and once in the Semi-Finals. In Season 9, the Golden Buzzer sent the act to the next round regardless of the other judges' votes; its main purpose was to break ties. In Season 10 , the Golden Buzzer was upgraded to send an act straight to the live shows. This method continues on for the next several seasons. From Season 11 onwards, the host can use the Golden Buzzer to send an act straight to the live shows. In Season 16 onwards, the host and the judges can use it to send an act straight to the live shows. In Season 18 , the audience also had the power to send an act to the live shows.

The Golden Buzzer is a buzzer on the Judges' Panel which, when pressed, automatically grants an act a place in the Semi-Finals. When the Golden Buzzer is pressed, the Judge's corresponding X on the front of the Judges' desk and above the stage will illuminate Gold instead of Red, The stage background also turns gold. None of the Judges' X symbols illuminate. To date, it has been been taken advantage of a total of five times. These acts were both seen as comical despite the first portraying himself as a serious artist. In Series 8 a total of two golden buzzer acts made the finals. In Series 9 three golden buzzer acts made the finals. In Series 10 a total of four golden buzzer acts made the finals. History was made in Series 11 with all five golden buzzer acts making the final after Sarah Ikumu was chosen as the wildcard and prior to this she was the one golden buzzer of the series, who saw herself eliminated. While it is referred to as a "palace" because of its intended use as the retirement residence of Diocletian, the term can be misleading as the structure is massive and more resembles a large fortress: about half of it was for Diocletian's personal use, and the rest housed the military garrison. Starting in season 10, the Golden Buzzer sent acts straight to the live shows. During the Judge Cuts where the acts re-audition and the judges narrow down the bunch , the show brings along a guest judge who gets the chance to use the Golden Buzzer as well. America's Got Talent changed the rules yet again during its current season. Simon Cowell decided that nine-year-old singer Victory Brinker deserved to go to the live shows despite all four judges having used their buzzers already. So, in an impromptu fashion, Terry, Howie, Heidi, Sofia, and Simon all pressed the button together and Victory made history as the first AGT competitor to get the buzzer from everyone. The first was ventriloquist Paul Zerdin, who received it during the judge cuts.
