Thanos of the far future brings the current day Earth to his time to convince the younger Thanos to kill him, so that his Lady Death will finally pay attention to at least a version of him. It is in this far future that the younger Thanos discovers the real reason the old Mad Titan has not only broken and enslaved the Cosmic Ghost Rider, but still keeps him around to this day. Every morning Thanos holds the Cosmic Ghost Rider's skull, looks deep into his eyes, and forces the cosmic being to give him the Penance Stare. Typically, this would be the most horrifying experience anyone could go through, but for Thanos it is a joyous occasion, reminding him of all the "beautiful" things he has done in his life in the name of his love Death. For Thanos, the Penance Stare is " the most haunting spiritual journey he will ever encounter ," and it is one of the few ways for the all-powerful being to feel true " exhilaration " or joy.
