As math teachers we need to be honest. Teaching geometry in high school is not at all like teaching algebra. For the first time in math, they need to remember definitions, all of the properties of a shape, and a long list of postulates and theorems. An interactive notebook is a method for organizing note taking. Notes are taken in a notebook, not a binder. They often include a table of contents, and can include foldables that students literally interact with.
Technically, note-writing, in general, is interactive. Teacher talks. Student writes. But the idea behind interactive notebooks is students interacting with the content. This means engagement, discovery, investigation, mistakes, learning from mistakes, and ownership. One printed page is equal to two student pages, but it is more than just printing The pages are designed to include three sections. The main section has guided notes with definitions and examples. The bottom section is to be used last and lets students have a chance to attempt the geometry independently.
