Fortnite, the popular battle royale game from Epic Games, is developed using the Unreal Engine. Specifically, Fortnite is known for being created with Unreal Engine 4. The Unreal Engine is a powerful, versatile game engine developed by Epic Games. It's widely used in the industry for developing AAA games due to its high-quality graphics capabilities and robust toolset that allows for creating complex gameplay mechanics, realistic physics, and engaging multiplayer experiences. This allows developers to create gameplay elements without needing to write code, making it accessible for both programmers and non-programmers. Given that Epic Games develops both Fortnite and the Unreal Engine, they are able to tightly integrate game features with engine capabilities. They have also used Fortnite as a showcase for new Unreal Engine features, implementing them into the game to push the boundaries of what can be achieved within their game engine.

Fortnite is an online video game and game platform developed by Epic Games and released in It is available in six distinct game mode versions that otherwise share the same general gameplay and game engine: Fortnite Battle Royale , a free-to-play battle royale game in which up to players fight to be the last person standing; Fortnite: Save the World , a cooperative hybrid tower defense - shooter and survival game in which up to four players fight off zombie -like creatures and defend objects with traps and fortifications they can build; and Fortnite Creative , in which players are given complete freedom to create worlds and battle arenas, Lego Fortnite , Rocket Racing and Fortnite Festival. Save the World and Battle Royale were released in as early access titles, while Creative was released on December 6, While the Save the World and Creative versions have been successful for Epic Games, Fortnite Battle Royale in particular became an overwhelming success and a cultural phenomenon , drawing more than million players in less than a year, earning hundreds of millions of dollars per month. Fortnite is distributed as six different game modes, using the same engine; each has similar graphics and art assets. Players can use their pickaxe to knock down existing structures on the map to collect basic resources that are wood, brick, and metal. Subsequently, in all modes, the player can use these materials to build fortifications, such as walls, floors, and stairs. Such fortification pieces can be edited to add things like windows or doors. The materials used have different durability properties and can be updated to stronger variants using more materials of the same type. Within Save the World this enables players to create defensive fortifications around an objective or trap-filled tunnels to lure husks through. In Battle Royale , this provides the means to quickly traverse the map, protect oneself from enemy fire, or to delay an advancing foe.

As part of the start of Fortnite Chapter 3, Epic Games has announced that Fortnite development has shifted to Unreal Engine 5, the latest version of the company's graphic technology. We're excited to share this journey with you and are working to make this the best experience possible for the entire Fortnite community. Earlier this year, Unreal Engine 5 was officially released in Early Access , letting game devs test out the new tools and features in the next-gen engine. More Unreal Engine 5 tech demos and projects are already starting to crop up. Major studios like Gears of War team The Coalition have begun developing on the new engine and showed off a stunning Unreal Engine 5 tech demo; giving a glimpse to what could be the future of the Gears series on Xbox Series X. But, Fortnite is taking it a step further than these other projects, shifting all development to Unreal Engine 5, pushing the engine beyond tech demos. Fortnite Chapter 2 wrapped up earlier this week and was swiftly replaced by Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 1 , which comes with a different island map, new gameplay, and a new Battle Pass featuring Spider-Man. Reactions to the changes are already positive, and many fans are specifically praising how good Spider-Man's web-slinging is in Fortnite. Logan Plant is a freelance writer for IGN. Epic Games has shown off the future of its powerful Unreal Engine, including a first glimpse at Amy Hennig's Captain America and Black Panther game, and closer integration of the eye-catching MetaHumans tech into UEN, during this year's annual State of Unreal broadcast by the company. The show's highlight was its peek at Marvel Rise of Hydra, Hennig's highly-anticipated World War 2 superhero game , which is built in Unreal Engine and shows off its latest features - including improved Nanite tesselation to make high-quality 3D geometry more memory efficient, and photo-realistic character animation using MetaHumans. A preview build of Unreal Engine 5. Epic also demonstrated how Fortnite creators will be able to build custom Lego and Rocket Racing mini-games. A cool-looking demo named Talisman showed off how it all looks - and how UEFN can create realistic environments and people, very different to Fortnite's stylised battle royale modes. A key advance here is that optimisation of MetaHuman data can shrink its realistic character models down from almost 1GB in size to around 60MB. More than 80, UEFN experiences have now been published in Fortnite, which have been played by million players.
