As communities to the west of Edmonton remain evacuated, Strathcona County wants to prevent the same situation from coming into our community. A fire ban has been declared for all of Strathcona County as of Monday, May 1. The ban applies to the entire county, which includes all rural areas, hamlets and Sherwood Park. The county has called the ban in response to the dry, hot and windy weather. No outdoor fires are permitted until further notice, the county said in a statement, which includes all burning barrels, recreational fire pits or charcoal barbecues. Fireworks are also banned at this time and all fire and fireworks permits have been suspended until after the ban is lifted. Residents and businesses are expected to comply with the fire bans, burn permit conditions and the fire bylaw or face a penalty.

Both evacuation orders that were prompted by wildfires in Strathcona County were lifted by Saturday afternoon.
