Generally, those projections seem to be true at first, as the Winter King presents himself as a noble hero figure that is not plagued by the powers of the crown. At first, this seemed like a cool way to explore the possibility that the crown may not be limited to only causing suffering to its host. One that, of course, makes Simon feel instantly inferior. Brian David Gilbert does such a great job at instilling an immediate charm into the character that feels both convincing while simultaneously being cartoonishly over-the-top. I really enjoy their contributions for Beyond the Grotto and Ketchup , but they were either permitted a lot more freedom, were compensated more graciously, or simply have evolved as a studio over time, because MAN is this whole sequence gorgeous. The painterly, Christmas-like backdrops look especially gorgeous, incorporating these really lush textures and beautiful details, like the reflections of house lights and character outlines off the icy lake. In an interview, Adam Muto referred to this episode as being similar in tone to a Rankin-Bass special, and I think that really checks out — the overly hammy characters, the expositional musical numbers, and the sparkly Christmas imagery. Could see it being factored in as a pseudo-Christmas special for the franchise as a whole. The Winter King apparently went through a similar history as Simon, having been turned into the Ice King after putting on the crown. In his dimension, however, the Ice King cast a spell on Princess Bubblegum, transferring the madness of the crown to her consciousness. This transformed her into the Candy Queen, losing her sanity and making her ruin her own Candy Kingdom.

Meanwhile in another alternate reality known as Winterworld , Simon , Fionna and Cake are beamed into an ice kingdom and are immediately pursued by the Scarab , who tagged along with the three after the events of the previous episode. They're immediately saved by a mysterious ice wizard known as The Winter King , who freezes the Scarab in place.
