It's the kind of gamble that Final Fantasy has happily made in the past so that the series may reinvent itself to execute the type of story its creatives want to tell. There are certain immutable pieces of symbolism that must carry over from game to game — chocobos, Cid, moogles — but the shape in which they appear is always different. In my mind, I see it as a series of dials that get pushed up or down depending on who is in charge of each installment. Some people prefer the game when the angst dial is turned all the way up, and others want to see a little more volume on the dungeons or puzzles. I gravitate toward the sweeping, melodramatic stories of Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy 16 is a fast-paced action game that begs to be played over and over again. You play as the main character Clive Rosfield, once a prince of a duchy and now an enslaved soldier, and you puppet this man from combat encounter to combat encounter between scripted scenes that drive the story forward and excursions to check out the side quests. Rather than summoning characters like Garuda or Shiva to fight for him, Clive is imbued with the elemental power of these Eikons. Eikons are the physical embodiment of the elemental powers of super-special magic users called Dominants yes, they are all called Dominants all the time, and no, it never stops being funny. In the fiction of the world, only Dominants can summon the powers of or transform into Eikons, and there can only be one Eikon per element at a time. Each unlocked Eikon gives you a new set of elemental powers to mix and match.
But the majority of these secondary activities are desperately boring, ff16 rating, a chorus of complaints about obscure cooking ingredients, missing people and item deliveries which lead to yet more ff16 rating battles, with minimal narrative structure and few surprises.
The latest in this legendary series is more an evolution of the character action genre than the RPG foundation the franchise was built on. It merges quick twitch reflexes with character-building RPG mechanics, but focuses far more on the former than ever before. Final Fantasy 16 picks up the ball that FF14 got rolling and continues to move the series back down the path of high fantasy, taking more than a little inspiration from Game of Thrones along the way. At the heart of this tale is your character, Clive Rosfield , the eldest prince of the kingdom of Rosaria and protector of his brother Joshua , the Dominant of Phoenix Clive is a fantastic, well-rounded protagonist, brilliantly brought to life by actor Ben Starr. He undergoes a lot of change and development over the course of the decades-long story, but always remains supremely likable, relatable, and an absolute badass when the need arises, as it very often does. The rest of the cast is excellent as well.
In ditching turn-based combat for combo-heavy melees, Final Fantasy 16 recaptures the spirit of reinvention that the series lends itself to. This new approach to action coalesces with a world you'll want to explore, and an endearing story which is powerfully executed by its voice cast. W hat makes a Final Fantasy? For me, Final Fantasy is more of a mood. The game radiates a sense of care, in its themes and in the way characters treat one another. Like Final Fantasy VII, it reminds us that we have one planet to live on and that we should treat one another with kindness.

It's difficult to say more without spoiling things, but Final Fantasy 16 is both the classic RPG tale in which you range around amping up your own legend so as to thwart Armageddon, and a story about how that concentration of agency isolates and alienates you, becoming a commodity that can be wrested out of your hands, much like the Mothercrystals over which Valisthea's nobles spill so much blood. Magic users, known as Bearers, are tested and enslaved at birth and given a face tattoo so that everyone can always identify them. But save for your magic wolf, Torgal, who can be ordered to launch enemies and cast last-resort micro-heals with the D-pad, they're under AI control and largely serve only to distract or mop up any foes you're not targeting. That contradiction speaks to the oddly self-cancelling nature of the story as a whole. Heck, it might just be the best Final Fantasy yet! However gameplay does not get more involved the further you play. Eikons are supremely powerful beings that Final Fantasy fans will recognize as the usual summons from previous games, and Dominants are the special humans who are able to tap into their power, even to the point of fully transforming into them. Parental controls are available for virtually every device on which your kids can play games.
