If you cross Yeniceriler Cadessi from the Grand Bazaar and walk down Tiyatro Cadessi in case you have not figured it out Cadessi means avenue or down Carsikapi Cadessi you should find yourself in Kumkapi, the old Armenian quarter which is now I suppose a Kurdish quarter and will one day be the quarter of another up and coming group.

My wife and I have been coming to Istanbul on a fairly regular basis for business, and we always stay in Kumkapi, just west of the Sultanahmet district, at the Sultanahmet Suites a updated review of our stay at that delightful residence will be forthcoming. One reason we like Kumkapi is that it has not, at least as of today, been overrun with tourists. Until tonight, however, we had resisted revisiting the numerous fish restaurants in Kumkapi which are only about four blocks from our residence because of the touristic atmosphere, the pushiness of the staff at some restaurants, and quite frankly, the belief that we weren't receiving good value at the dinner table. All that ended tonight. We went on line to Tripadvisor to see if there was a restaurant recommended for fine dining, value, and more of a true Turkish atmosphere regarding hospitality. One restaurant recommended was the Kumkapi Fener Fish Restaurant, and I can only repeat what other guests at that restaurant have said: It was a wonderful meal, excellently prepared, and served by a courteous and knowledgeable waiting staff. We were eating lightly, and chose only two meze a delightful mussel salad and a wonderful cold eggplant dish. For the main course, we both were going to order grilled levrek when the waiter politely suggested we share one grilled levrek with a levrek stew as our alternative entree. I love grilled fish, but the levrek stew with mushrooms and a light tomato sauce was spectacular. Paired with a dry white wine from Pamukkale, and followed by both a fresh fruit course and an usually good hot helvah pudding for lack of a better word , our dinner was indeed memorable.
