I am here to tell you not to believe that hogwash. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a spectacular fantasy adventure, huge in scope but also filled with rich character work and deep emotion.

The Lotr trilogy is a flawless masterpiece for sure, but the Hobbit trilogy will always have a special place in my heart as I grew up with them.

The music of The Hobbit film series is composed, orchestrated, and produced by Howard Shore , who scored all three The Lord of the Rings films , to which The Hobbit film trilogy is a prequel series. It continues the style of The Lord of the Rings score, using a vast ensemble, multiple musical forms and styles, many leitmotifs, and unusual instruments. Shore composed over nine hours of music, featuring many new themes and reprising 50 themes from The Lord of the Rings. The score calls for an ensemble of a symphony orchestra, stage "bands" featuring non-orchestral instruments, multiple choirs, and several vocal soloists.

Shore has created some wonderful new motifs for this film. Holm again, and of course I was delighted to see a certain other familiar face from The Lord of the Rings as well. The all-CGI nature of the character stood out a bit, and the, um, testicular nature of his design was certainly off-putting though I suppose that was the intention.
