The Victoria Inn, known by everyone as Fannys, had been closed for a while but has been gutted, rebuilt and extended. It is a first for the family to set up a company to buy and refurbish a pub but if they are successful with Fannys they plan to open more if suitable premises come on the market. The family bought the pub from Punch Taverns which means, as a free house , Fannys is free of being tied to buy beers at higher prices. It also means they can bring in a series of real or cask ales and have at least one guest beers on a regular basis. Mr Shaw lives in Heaton , near to the pub, and with his family, including his brother Ken, decided they would buy, refurbish and reopen the pub as they always enjoyed the atmosphere of the Markland Hill Lane hostelry. The new owners have kept two things from the old pub — three original beer engines have been refurbished and now stand proud on the wooden bar — and the name Fannys.
