F1 has turned its sprint race into a standalone Saturday event, with sprint qualifying deciding the starting grid followed by the sprint race later in the day. The red flag has shaken up the order with Lance Stroll taking third place in front of Aston Martin team-mate Fernando Alonso, while it is an all-Mercedes third row with Lewis Hamilton in fifth and George Russell in sixth. McLaren driver Lando Norris, who looked set to challenge for pole after topping the Q2 segment, was caught out by the weather and was "gutted" to only manage seventh ahead of former team-mate Carlos Sainz Ferrari. Sergio Perez was the last out on track in Q3 and took ninth, only ahead of Oscar Piastri who spun off on his only lap before the red flag. The sprint race for the Brazilian GP starts at pm local time pm GMT , covering a distance of 24 laps or 60 minutes. In the United Kingdom Formula 1 is broadcast live on Sky Sports, with highlights shown on Channel 4 several hours after the race has finished. While the bulk of the season consists of traditional Grand Prix weekends, six of them — a quarter of the 24 events in total — have been designated F1 Sprint events. But what is a Sprint event? The Sprint is a short race. It covers km — about one-third of a typical Grand Prix distance — and should last about 30 minutes. This length has been chosen to encourage a race that is dynamic rather than strategic. Unlike a Grand Prix, there are no mandatory pit stops. The venues chosen for Sprint events are all tracks with great overtaking potential, picked to try and ensure the Sprint is a flat-out, aggressive melee from start to finish. Points are on offer, from eight down to one, awarded for the first eight cars to finish. A Sprint weekend is different to the traditional Grand Prix weekend but it's still a three-day affair with the Grand Prix as the main event — only with even more excitement.
