Being cruel and villainous is vital for an evil playthrough, so such an action does have its merit inside a game, but it is certainly one of the worst things a player can do in Act 1, even if it does not have too many narrative consequences. Alternatively, players can wait for the owlbear cub to be kidnapped by the goblins and then kill it after releasing it in what can be considered the ultimate act of spite.
