His name may be derived from the river Eridanoswhich was poured onto the Earth by Aquarius in Greek myth, or may derived from the constellation Eridanus. Eridan ampora, Eridan may have been based off of the user Terin's name for Alternia, which was Eridani.

He is a violet-blooded sea-dwelling alien Troll with a genocide complex towards lower-blooded trolls. He succumbs to the belief of the Hemospectrum, in which certain members of the Troll race are naturally higher or lower than one another based on the color of their blood. Eridan started with an impressive degree of romantic success, being in a kismesissitude with Vriska Serket and a moirailegiance with Feferi Peixes. Vriska's kismessitude died as quickly as she lost interest in him, her pitch favours turning to another Troll named Tavros Nitram. Feferi broke up with him shortly after, leaving Eridan entirely alone without a filled quadrant to his name. Later, Kanaya Maryam pretended to take Eridan on as an apprentice, and began "teaching" him how to use magic.

His first name read backwards is Nadire ; a nadir is a lowest point, or a point of greatest adversity or despair. However, this could be a coincidence. Ampora is likely derived from the amphora , a type of Greek vessel for carrying liquids which is often seen in depictions of Aquarius.
