Enigma movie 2014
Benedict Cumberbatch stars as pioneering mathematician and codebreaker Alan Turing, who was highly influential, but persecuted for being gay. Age group 11—16 years. Duration mins. An excellent film portraying Turins character, live and times. Although I appreciate the writers freedom and use of poetic license, I found that there were several historical indesrepencies which I could not ignore. Cumberbatch was perfectly cast for the role, with his ability to portray the character of Turin and his multiple insecurities. I have rated this film such, as I believe that parts of the film may have been over-dramatised with an experienced use of real life footage mixed with although a slightly adapted version of the re-enacted moments in Bletchleys past. The directors made clever use of a real life Enigma machine, however I feel that not removing the museums explanation plaque from the inside of its lid in some far off shots, was a mistake, I am pleased to say that in all close-ups it had been removed. Despite the lack of visible action, this film clearly portrayed the effect Bletchley had on the British war effort however it was more focused on Turin and his colleagues. The facts have truly been, if slightly warped in places, stuck to and the moving part of the film is not necessarily Turin's contribution at Bletchley but him being persecuted in spite of this, this shows how the official secrets act, although it protected many aspects of British intelligence, left many of its assets exposed to persicution despite their true patriotism. The music was well used although it only appeared on rare occasions in the main part where there was no dialogue. Although I understand why the changes in reality were made in order to impress a general audience, I am upset that they did not allow the film to cater for the more specialist audience. My opinion is that the film although interesting should have been more historically accurate.
Allen Leech John Cairncross. You don't get to decide who lives and who dies.
The film's title quotes the name of the game cryptanalyst Alan Turing proposed for answering the question "Can machines think? Based on the real life story of legendary cryptanalyst Alan Turing, the film portrays the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team of code-breakers at Britain's top-secret Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of World War II. View More. The first time I saw this movie, I loved it. It made me want to learn more about Alan Turing, but the more I learned, the more I realised how inaccurate this movie is. It is well acted, well produced, well cast, and I would still love it if not for the fact that it differs so much from what really happened that it would have been more appropriate to change all the names and portray it as purely historical fiction rather than pretending it has anything to do with the real Alan Turing. He would later be publicly vilified and savagely punished for engaging in homosexual activity, which was criminalized in England at the time, before committing suicide in Instead of being festooned with a chest full of medals, the closeted genius who saved countless lives by significantly shortening the war was cruelly subjected to chemically-induced castration in lieu of jail time. And, because much of the details were kept classified for 50 years, few knew of the extent of his wartime feats, even though he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services in He was officially pardoned of his offenses by Queen Elizabeth in —a case of too little too late. This atypical biopic about the brilliant, impossibly arrogant and socially awkward mathematician played by Benedict Cumberbatch , impeccably perfect in every way is a somewhat hard read at first. Most likely, it was the intent of screenwriter Graham Moore to make a puzzle out a film about puzzle solving. That is not necessarily a bad thing, however, once the pieces fall into in place.
