The ancient Dragon Language also called Dragon tongue , [1] [2] dragon-tongue , [3] or Draconic language [4] is the language used by dragons. Text in the Dragon Language is found on walls in ancient dungeons and on burial grounds. With sufficient understanding, certain words can be incanted to produce magical effects such as conjuring fire, frost, or wind, slowing time, or pushing an enemy away. This ability is known as the Thu'um and is an inborn talent of Dragons and Dragonborn. Scholars posit the Dragonlings found in northwestern Tamriel are unrelated to true Dragons, [7] yet other sources claim they are kin. The language is structurally similar to English, with three exceptions: it has no equivalent to English's apostrophes, it tends to place prepositional phrases earlier in sentences, and verb tense is often ignored. For example, the plural form of "kel" an Elder Scroll is "kelle". The singular possessive "my", "your", "his", or "her" is formed by adding the letter "i" to the end of the word, except when the word ends in "ii", in which case an "l" is appended. The first-person plural possessive "our" is formed by adding the letter "u". To indicate a perfect verb form as in "has silenced " , the letters "aan" are added to the end of the word. The language makes heavy use of compound words, and tends to be head-initial i.

A word wall with inscriptions in the dragon language. The dragon language is the language used in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim by dragons in shouts , on word walls , in names, etc. Additionally, each Dragon Priest 's name is a word in the Dragon Language. The dragon language is an innate characteristic of dragons, who use it both to speak regularly and to cast magic using words of power, known as the Thu'um. Dragons use the Thu'um to 'shout' with one to three words of power in the dragon language, and the words used for a shout are expressive of the effects of that shout; for example, 'force,' 'balance,' and 'push' make up the three words of power of unrelenting force. While dragons have a natural understanding of the dragon language and the Thu'um, any person can both learn to speak the language and shout using words of power if they are trained to do so.
