E92 m3 engine
It's the only 3-er to get a V8, and with a redline well north of 8, rpm, it's a humdinger e92 m3 engine wring out. When everything is just right, the naturally aspirated mill generates horsepower kilowatts in stock trim. The M3 featured here is indeed stock, but atmiles, it's not exactly new.
The E90 series, that has been with us a few years, is no exception. By many elected the perfect combination of usability and performance. A real sports car, with room for passengers. With its well balanced chassi, its thorough construction and hefty V8, this is almost the perfect core for a race car. But only almost.

If you want an M3, the E9x generation is increasingly looking like the one to go for. Old enough to be affordable, but new enough to be fast and dynamically accomplished. Finally, supplies are good, meaning there are plenty out there and lots of choice. There are a few things to be aware of, however, including the notorious rod bearing failure. This can land owners with huge bills to have the bottom ends rebuilt. As such, it may be worth having the bearings changed as a preventative measure. More common than rod bearing failure - but thankfully less catastrophic - are issues with the throttle actuators. If you want the practicality and more subtle looks of the saloon, be prepared to spend longer looking for your M3, because the four-door E90 is a whole lot rarer than the two-door E92 and E93 cabriolet. The four-door is marginally heavier 25kg , and you lose the fancy carbon fibre roof. In the context of all five generations, however, the E92 is dreamy, as we discovered in our M3 mega test a few years ago. This is a car you can do some serious miles in, so long as you can stomach our next point…. While some naturally-aspirated V8s can return surprisingly good economy figures when driven conservatively, the E9x M3 is a thirsty scoundrel however gently you treat the throttle.
M Performance Parts can be fitted to all models.

BMW Engines. Horatiu Boeriu. The S65 shares the same 92 mm 3. A wet-sump lubrication system with an oil return pump and a main oil pump replaces the three-pump wet-sump system used on the V10, further decreasing weight. The alternator disconnects from the engine during acceleration to maximise power, only charging the battery during braking and decelerating whenever possible, in a system BMW calls Brake Energy Regeneration. The newer M3 control units are manufactured by Continental and are no longer labeled Siemens. The resulting engine weighs kg lb : 15 kg 33 lb lighter than the straight-6 engine it replaces, while also being shorter.

The screaming, 8, rpm V8 is the defining element of the E92 M3 , but do you know why BMW chose a V8 over a more traditional straight-six? Thanks to a new video from BMW, now we do. From the ten-cylinder engine, we derived our V8 engine. While Himmel doesn't say this outright, his statement implies that turbocharging was not much of a consideration for the E92 M3. BMW M in the mids was clearly much more resistant to the idea of turbocharging than it is now. Of course, turbo technology improved significantly in the years between the E92 and the current M3, so the decision to switch to turbocharging was probably less controversial for the F80 M3. In any case, we're happy BMW gave us this glorious V8 before it switched to turbos.
