The International TI7 was the seventh iteration of The International , an annual Dota 2 esports world championship tournament. Hosted by Valve , the game's developer, the tournament began with the online qualifier phase in June , and ended after the main event at the KeyArena in Seattle in August. Other relevant events took place during the tournament, including a cosplay competition and submitted short film contest with their own independent prize pools. In addition, the first demonstration game of what later became the OpenAI Five , bots trained to defeat high-skill players of the game entirely through machine learning , was played live during the event. Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena MOBA video game developed by Valve , which released in In it, two teams of five players compete by selecting pre-designed in-game hero characters, each with a variety of innate skills and deploy-able powers, and cooperating together to destroy the base of the other team before their own base is destroyed as to win the round. The game is played from a top-down perspective, and the player sees a segment of the game's map near their character as well as mini-map that shows their allies, with any enemies revealed outside the fog of war. The game's map has three symmetric "lanes" between each base, with a number of automated defense towers protecting each side. Periodically, the team's base will spawn an army of weak non-playable "creeps" that will march down one lane towards the opponents' base, fighting any enemy hero, creep, or structure they encounter. If a hero character is killed, that character will respawn back at their base after a delay period, which gets progressively longer the farther into the match. As with previous years of the tournament, a corresponding battle pass for Dota 2 was released in May , allowing the prize pool to be crowdfunded by players of the game. Prior to each game in the tournament, a pre-game draft was held between the opposing team captains to select which heroes their teams will use, going back and forth until each side has selected and banned five heroes. Once a hero is picked, it cannot be selected by any other player that match, so teams use the draft to strategically plan ahead and deny the opponent's heroes that may be good counters or would be able to take advantage of weaknesses to their current lineup.

The International was the seventh iteration of Dota 2's flagship annual championship. The tournament began on 22 June with the Open Qualifiers and closed on 12 August with the Grand Final, where fan favorites Team Liquid defeated champions Newbee , becoming the first team to perform a clean sweep at the finals as well as the fourth European team to win. The majority of this sum is collected through several in-game items released by Valve, including the The International Battle Pass , a digital tournament pass and features bundle tied to the event that included many activities and cosmetic items. The International became the first not to feature the defending champion, as Wings Gaming had disbanded the previous year. Previous champions Natus Vincere and Alliance also failed to qualify. The rest of the champions were directly invited to the event. Similar to , only 6 direct invites were issued for the event, with the rest of the team securing their participation through the Open Qualifiers.
Forever Young in the upper bracket final. Liquid, meanwhile, dropped to the lower bracket of the tournament after the first round, and were forced to play facing elimination over the entire week. This proved a somewhat redemptive arc for the team, after a series of lower-than-expected results over the history of The International and an early exit last year. Liquid faced a number of teams in the lower bracket that were widely favored over the EU squad, including LGD. In game two, an aggressive early game from Newbee earned the Chinese team a strong start, but key teamfights and stalling tactics on the part of Liquid allowed carry player Amer "Miracle-" Al-Barkawi to recover and ultimately overwhelm Newbee. As game three opened, Newbee faced the prospect of a second place finish, and changed their drafting strategy to favor early to mid-game push and objectives. Ultimately, however, Newbee proved unable to course correct, and ultimately fell to Liquid in straight sets. Many fans had hoped that Newbee might become the first Dota 2 Organization to secure a second International title, to accompany the Aegis the team won in at TI4. Meanwhile, Liquid fans are likely ecstatic for team captain Kuro "KuroKy" Salehi Takhasomi, who has failed to place in the top six of the International since , as a member of esports organization Alliance despite appearing at six of the seven Internationals.
