The specific role of the striatum, especially its dorsolateral DLS and dorsomedial DMS parts, in male copulatory behavior is still debated. In order to clarify their contribution to male sexual behavior, we specifically ablated the major striatal neuronal subpopulations, direct and indirect medium spiny neurons dMSNs and iMSNs in DMS or DLS, and dMSNs, iMSNs and cholinergic interneurons in nucleus accumbens NAc , The main results of this study can be summarized as follows: In DMS, dMSN ablation causes a reduction in the percent of mice that mount a receptive female, and a complex alteration in the parameters of the copulatory performance, that is largely opposite to the alterations induced by iMSN ablation. In DLS, dMSN ablation causes a widespread alteration in the copulatory behavior parameters, that tends to disappear at repetition of the test; iMSN ablation induces minor copulatory behavior alterations that are complementary to those observed after dMSN ablation. In NAc, dMSN ablation causes a marked reduction in the percent of mice that mount a receptive female and a disruption of copulatory behavior, while iMSN ablation induces minor copulatory behavior alterations that are opposite to those observed with dMSN ablation, and cholinergic neuron ablation induces a selective decrease in mount latency. Overall, present data point to a complex region and cell-specific contribution to copulatory behavior of the different neuronal subpopulations of both dorsal and ventral striatum, with a prominent role of the dMSNs of the different subregions. Abstract The specific role of the striatum, especially its dorsolateral DLS and dorsomedial DMS parts, in male copulatory behavior is still debated. Publication types Research Support, Non-U.

We describe a three-dimensional 3D confocal imaging technique to characterize and enumerate rare, newly emerging hematopoietic cells located within the vasculature of whole-mount preparations of mouse embryos. However, the methodology is broadly applicable for examining the development and 3D architecture of other tissues. Previously, direct whole-mount imaging has been limited to external tissue layers owing to poor laser penetration of dense, opaque tissue. Our whole-embryo imaging method enables detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis of cells within the dorsal aorta of embryonic day E In this protocol we describe the whole-mount fixation and multimarker staining procedure, the tissue transparency treatment, microscopy and the analysis of resulting images. Dorsal root ganglion stimulation DRG-S has significantly improved the treatment of complex regional pain syndrome CRPS , and it has broad applicability across a wide range of other conditions. Through funding and organizational leadership by the American Society for Pain and Neuroscience ASPN , this best practices consensus document has been developed for the selection, implantation, and use of DRG stimulation for the treatment of chronic pain syndromes. This document is composed of a comprehensive narrative literature review that has been performed regarding the role of the DRG in chronic pain and the clinical evidence for DRG-S as a treatment for multiple pain etiologies. Best practice recommendations encompass safety management, implantation techniques, and mitigation of the potential complications reported in the literature. Looking to the future of neuromodulation, DRG-S holds promise as a robust intervention for otherwise intractable pain. With the introduction of new medical therapies, there is an inevitable growth of fundamental knowledge and improvements in outcomes. Dorsal root ganglion stimulation DRG-S is a novel form of neuromodulatory therapy, that, rather than placing the electrical field over the dorsal columns of the spinal cord, as with conventional, tonic spinal cord stimulation t-SCS , is placed near the cell nuclei of the afferent neurons of the dorsal root ganglia DRG.

An example showcasing successful and failed attempts of an animal when undertaking the moving object task. Vision Res 13 — Animals were first presented with a static task, which involved presenting a food reward that was placed on a pedestal in front of the animal Fig. Following complete habituation, the ability of the animal in the goal-oriented reach and grasp of static objects was examined, whereby the animal was presented with a target object in the form of a food reward piece of fruit. Table 2. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study examining the tuning properties of V1 neurons following an early-life injury to an extrastriate area. Therefore, it is conceivable that the reduced PV population in V1 following the early-life lesion in MT is the underlying basis for the observed lower proportion of DS neurons in V1. Standard anatomical terms of location are used to unambiguously describe the anatomy of animals , including humans. The terms, typically derived from Latin or Greek roots, describe something in its standard anatomical position. This position provides a definition of what is at the front "anterior" , behind "posterior" and so on.

Following identification of the scotoma, recordings were conducted in V1 within and outside the lesion projection zone LPZ. Most notably, MT-lesioned animals showed impairment in their ability to engage in a static reach-and-grasp task in which the food reward is placed in a narrow slot so that the animal must only use the index and thumb for successful retrieval of the food reward. Cereb Cortex 27 — In adulthood, we observed perturbations in goal-orientated reach-and-grasp behavior, altered direction selectivity of V1 neurons, and changes in the cytoarchitecture throughout dorsal stream areas. Clinical studies that examined the consequence of losing V1 in early life versus adulthood demonstrated a marked difference in behavioral performance Weiskrantz et al. Each static object retrieval session consisted of 15—20 trials. Figure 1. As there is a significant reciprocal monosynaptic connectivity between MT and V1, we wanted to observe whether an early-life lesion of MT had an impact on the response properties of neurons in the LPZ of the ipsilesional V1 in adulthood. J Neurosci 22 — Figure 3. Electrophysiological recordings Animals M and F underwent a single recording session under deep anesthesia.
