Action anime has an unfortunate reputation of being dominated by male leads and featuring disappointingly few well-written female characters. Yet, incredible female protagonists are not as rare in action anime as many fans presume. Battle-oriented genres, like shonen and seinen, are commonly aimed at male demographics, which creates an unfortunate shortage of action-packed series led by women. However, the heroines that do get to shine on the frontlines of explosive battle series are often incredible, not only in physical prowess but also in strength of character. Action plots that focus on female leads often excel at developing multifaceted heroines whose complex characterization could rival that of shojo and romance series.

Set in a medieval Europe -inspired dark fantasy world, the story centers on the characters of Guts , a lone swordsman , and Griffith , the leader of a mercenary band called the "Band of the Hawk". The series follows Guts' journey seeking revenge on Griffith, who betrayed him and sacrificed his comrades to become a powerful demonic being. Miura premiered a prototype of Berserk in The series began the following year in Hakusensha 's manga magazine Monthly Animal House [ ja ] , which was replaced in by the semimonthly magazine Young Animal , where Berserk has continued its publication. It came to a head when Guts was forced to kill a drunk Gambino in self-defense, fleeing his mercenary group and becoming a wandering sellsword. His fearsome reputation catches the attention of Griffith , the charismatic leader of a mercenary group known as the Band of the Hawk.

The greedy samurai lord Daigo Kagemitsu's land is dying, and he would do anything for power, even renounce Buddha and make a pact with demons.
