He was hired on the spot, and under his management the store prospered. But when Holmes's attempt to purchase the drugstore from Mrs. Holton went sour, and she sued him, she inexplicably disappeared - never to be seen or heard from again. He hired and fired a succession of workmen to build the castle, thus eliminating witnesses to its secrets: a labyrinth of trapdoors, winding passageways, dark dead-end halls, stairways to nowhere, bedchambers fitted with peepholes and asphyxiating gas pipes, soundproof vaults and torture chambers, greased chutes large enough to send human bodies from the living quarters to a cellar equipped with acid vats, a crematorium, a dissecting table, and cases full of gleaming surgical tools. Corrina Morse. Depraved book you like psychological thrillers, this is right up your alley. I was hoping for a little more, however, depraved book, for even though Smith tries to spin some new life in this old horror trope, it did not really transcend it by any means.

If you really think of it, he was an evil genius. Depraved certainly lives up to its name, in that every character even the good guys seems hellbent to have sex with, or kill or both everything that moves. Otherwise, you'll do fine to steer clear. Well, the story opens with a girl named Jessica Sloan driving into a small town in Tennessee called Hopkins Bend, with a man in the trunk of her car she plans to murder and ditch his body in the middle of nowhere - her crime justified as the man had previously raped her. I love true crime books and this one held my interest.

It isn't Schechter's fault, the information just isn't anywhere-- it's gone with the victims, Holmes, and the shady men he dealed with; Schechter even writes that with the death of the janitor of the Castle, the secrets of the building died with him. Full of his trademark humor, graphic sex and violence, Smith's smooth narrative makes this for a very fast-paced and easy read and the two months it took me to read this novel had nothing to do with the book itself, just a busy eight weeks in my personal life. It was hard to put this book down and it kind of stayed with me in the down times too. For those without I'm guessing I fall into this camp , this book reads like a XXX comedy howler with a backwoods horror-trope setting. Holmes, because they didn't trust their gut when being lured to their deaths. Another tale of crazed rednecks? The time period showed how hard it was to track down witnesses and evidence in a time where proving an identity was often based on the loosest terms.
