De hecho, se les considera el vivero de los mares tropicales. De esta forma, sustentan toda una diversidad de especies y benefician la pesca en los mares tropicales. Al mejorar la calidad de las aguas en la costa, los manglares permiten el desarrollo de comunidades como los arrecifes de coral y herbazales marinos que dependen de aguas claras para subsistir. A los seis meses se observaron las primeras colonias de coral en crecimiento. Las dunas son grandes acumulaciones de arena en la playa que funcionan como barreras que nos protegen del fuerte oleaje del mar. Estas almacenan la arena que luego liberan para formar las playas que tanto disfrutamos. Algunas plantas que encontramos en las dunas son la uva de playa Coccoloba uvifera , el bejuco de playa Ipomea sp y la yerba de sal Spartina. Estos esfuerzos se realizan con residentes de las comunidades vecinas. Muchas de las acciones de nuestro Plan Integral de Manejo van dirigidas a mejorar y mantener esa diversidad de flora y fauna, a la vez que propician el uso recreativo de los recursos.
