The sign on the window is neon pink and shaped like a duck. A massive painting on the wall of the dining room depicts ducks feasting at a fruit-laden table like 19th century aristocrats. Wooden decoys crowd the ridiculously tiny host stand and the bar, where guys are using a stencil to spritz duck-shaped stamps of wine on the foamy caps of duck-fat-washed cocktails. Sensing a theme? The birds are from Long Island, delivered to the kitchen with the head and feet still on, then pumped full of air so the skin balloons out, away from the meat.

The whiskey-sour update Sitting Down for Dinner gets a hit of duck in the form of silky, fat-washed George Dickel fat is infused with alcohol, chilled and removed to give the whiskey a light meatiness and an egg-white froth stenciled with a crime-scene outline of the bird. Newly acquainted tablemates flirtily trade skewers for bites of sea-bass-and-avocado tart, a buzzed intimacy missing in the busy barn upstairs. RedFarm and Decoy both venues share the same menu; RedFarm is upstairs while Decoy is downstairs are not the place for the person that shows up in Chinatown at 11 AM, ready to battle it out with other people for the best shrimp dumplings from a rolling cart. To summarize this particular outing, both my father and I were amazed how good the food still is. I cannot find any fault in any of the dishes we ate. If anything I would comment, the speed of the dishes coming out from the kitchen reminds me of old school Chinese restaurants — it comes out in lighting speed — and I would prefer them to slow down a couple of beats so the food may be enjoyed more. From the team behind RedFarm , Decoy is a Peking duck lair in the space directly below the popular West Village Chinese spot -- which formerly housed its temporary, underground steakhouse -- and now looks a bit like the basement of an artsy farmer who loves a good cocktail and expertly cooked, whole, crisp-skinned juicy ducks. You need to make a reservation because they only serve 24 ducks per night , but once you do, here's how it works: you get one whole duck automatically, and then you get to choose small plates, a side dish or veggie fried rice, and a main in different amounts no mains for two, or two mains for four, for example. Any way you do it, it's actually a pretty decent deal. Here it is, in all its splendor. The dish has a rich, sweet, meaty flavor with some chewiness from the cakes. This small plate is cold sweet potato noodle salad with Spring veggies.
