Dragon Ball Z 's "Saiyan Saga" is one of the most iconic arcs in anime. It marked Piccolo's turning point from brooding baddie to begrudging ally, introduced fan-favorite martial arts master King Ka , and revealed the intergalactic origins of the now internationally famous Son Goku. The "Saiyan Saga" also introduced audiences to the franchise's villain-turned-hero Vegeta and his subordinate, the monstrous mountain of muscle Nappa. Since his first appearance in Episode 5, Nappa has cultivated an unshakable, devoted fan base. However, despite his dedicated following and low-key popularity, Nappa is also unfairly dismissed as something of a stock character or -- much worse -- a punchline. It's true that Nappa was effortlessly dispatched by Goku upon the latter's return from Other World and that Nappa's power was empirically inferior to Vegeta's, but Nappa proved himself as the arc's superior villain by virtue of one important metric: body count. These three held the topmost positions of power among the six Z Fighters available to challenge the Saiyan threat, and Nappa defeated each of them without a qualm.

However, it isn't long before Raditz and Vegeta's Super Saiyan 3 forms run out causing them both to revert to base instead of dying like Nappa. Goku could not catch up with Nappa, so he had to power up and reveal his new technique, the Kaio-ken, at x5, dbz nappa.

He tends to fight first and makes use of his brawn more so than his brain. In Bardock - The Father of Goku , this is alluded to be Vegeta's preference when he orders Nappa to "quit bootlicking".

Appearing as the second in a rolling roulette of super-powered villains in Dragon Ball Z , Nappa accompanied Prince Vegeta to Earth in order to collect the seven Dragon Balls for the sake of wishing for immortality.

After Tenshinhan died from using up all his energy, Vegeta ordered him to stop, as he was interested in seeing Kakarot Son Goku fight, and gave Kuririn, Piccolo, and Gohan three hours for Goku to show up. Rather than labor under the misnomer of a typical meatheaded henchman, Nappa deserves to be recognized as a force of terror and power very much on par with Vegeta. Vegeta, unfazed by the news simply goes about his business and intends to conquer more worlds. During the Intermission set in Age after the Frieza Saga, Gohan uses the Dragon Balls to revive Nappa to give him a second chance and so Gohan can fight him again for training purposes. Despite being highly loyal to his superiors, Nappa is shown to be rebellious, often ignoring or questioning the orders given to him, this even goes beyond the point that he'll attack his superiors or disobeys them if he is insulted, or he disagrees to the ideals of his superiors than his own.
