Jay Asher's career as a children's author started in his first year of college when he wrote and published three children's books. High school student Clay Jensen receives a mysterious package in the mail with seven cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker, a classmate who has recently died by suicide. The tapes have also been sent to several other classmates, instructing each of them to visit each person mentioned and to pass them on to the person following them on the tapes. Since its release, the novel has received both praise and criticism.
