It is based on geographic regions throughout country Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne with each team representing one of twelve Victorian regions, while a thirteenth team from Tasmania was reintroduced in The competition is one of the primary sources of recruitment for the clubs of the Australian Football League AFL , and it provides an opportunity for talented regional players to participate in a high standard competition without having to relocate too far from their place of origin. The competition has a very successful pathway with players missing AFL selection often being recruited by semi-professional state, country and regional leagues throughout Australia. An equivalent competition for female footballers, known as the Talent League Girls , is also contested on an annual basis. A new competition, administered by the Victorian State Football League and sponsored by the Transport Accident Commission , was formed as an avenue for young Victorian under players to make the transition to becoming senior League players. It commenced play on 10 April , the competition consisted of five metropolitan teams and one country team: the Northern Knights , Eastern Ranges , Southern Stingrays renamed the Dandenong Stingrays in , Western Jets , Central Dragons renamed the Prahran Dragons in , then the Sandringham Dragons in [2] and Geelong Falcons. In two additional metropolitan regions were established, with the Oakleigh Chargers and Calder Cannons teams included in the competition. In , a Tasmanian-based team, the Tassie Mariners , commenced in the competition, becoming the league's first non-Victorian side. The Mariners and Rams both exited the competition as full-time members at the end of the , returning the competition to twelve teams. Between and , the finals system was in a knock-out format. This reverted to a traditional finals system in with the introduction of the Gold Coast team. In the finals system was reverted to the traditional eight-team AFL finals series. For many years the league was primarily a competition for year-olds, though exceptions were made for bottom-aged players— or year-olds—and since , over-age players—year-olds—to participate in the competition. In the league shifted to an under level, though the entry age for the AFL Draft remains Since the beginning of the TAC Cup season, clubs have been granted permission to select up to five over-age players permitted on their lists.

Full season fixtures will be released soon and will include competition recess periods to allow boys and girls to play community, school and representative football throughout the season. The girls competition started in Over the years the competition has produced more AFL and AFLW players than any other league and is also an important development program for emerging coaches, umpires, administrators and support staff. Coates Talent League teams comprise mostly players from the under 18 age group with a selection of under 19 players also listed. In a boost for the regional pathway programs in Victoria and Tasmania , each program now has a dedicated full-time Coates Talent League Girls coach and a dedicated full-time Coates Talent League Boys coach in The AFL has also invested in increased youth wellbeing programming and resources for all regions, as well as additional administrative, high performance and medical resources. Additional resources will also benefit community football, with Coates Talent League coaches to work closely with AFL Victoria on providing support for community clubs and coaches. This aims to strengthen the connection between the talent pathways system and local clubs while also providing development opportunities for coaches at community level. It continues to grow the game and gives young athletes every opportunity to achieve their football dreams and play at the elite level.
